GMCC Karate Ministry

The GMCC Karate Ministry started on April 28, 2010. Sensei Richard M. Scott (pictured center) is a retired Assistant Chief Probation Officer, husband, father and grandfather. He has been teaching Okinawan Gojuryu Karate for over forty years and is a certified 7th Dan (degree) black belt. Sensei Scott is a Christian instructor who believes that students should be patiently taught according to their abilities. He continues training at the Okinawan Gojuryu Karate Academy in Watertown, MA, founded by the late 9th degree Master (and Karate pioneer in the U.S.) Anthony Mirakian. The class's founding Bible verse is the Lord's "I Love You Note", John 3:16. The classes are co-ed and for ages seven through adult.

General Classes are held: Wednesdays and Fridays 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Advanced Training Classes are held Wednesdays and Fridays 7:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Special Tactics Training Wednesdays and Fridays 8:00 p.m.- 8:30 p.m.

This is a not for profit ministry. The annual registration fee is $25.00. Uniforms range between $25-$40.

Global Ministries Christian Church Karate Dojo Annual Report for 2019

            The Karate Ministry was founded at G.M.C.C. on April 28, 2010 by brother Richard M. Scott, a certified 7thDegree Black Belt in Okinawan Gojuryu Karate. Sensei (Teacher) Scott was also founder and teacher for 34 years at his former church, the Twelfth Baptist Church of Roxbury, MA. There are presently 16 students.


            The classes are Co-ed and for ages 7 - to adult. 

Our General Classes meet in Butry Hall each Wednesday and Friday 

from 6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Advanced Training Classes: 7:30p.m. –  8p.m.

Special Tactics Training: 8p.m. – 8:30p.m. 

The class is not for profit. Instruction is free but there's an annual registration fee of $25.00 ( i.e. 24 cents a class ). The fees are used for equipment, witness materials for our *N.O.W. Table and to assist hardship cases. No one is ever rejected for financial reasons. Uniforms range between twenty five and forty dollars depending on size.


Our Founding Bible Verse is The Lord’s “I Love You Note” John 3:16.

   In addition to training in the Okinawan Gojuryu Karate system, students are taught the following: 

·      Jesus is LORD, serve Him.

·      Love Jesus, your neighbor and yourself. 

·      Alternatives to violence.

·      Violence is a Last resort and for self-defense only. 

·      Your body is God's Temple.               

·      Respect Authority. 

·      Read the Bible yourself. 

·      Self Control.

·      Pursue Excellence.                     

·      Courtesy. 

·      Faithfulness. 

·      Discipline. 


Manhood Principles are also taught, i.e. Real Men:

·      Love Jesus. 

·      Take care of their children.

·      Don’t hit females.

·      Have a work ethic. 

·      Are Not selfish. 

·      Keep their word. 


Sensei Richard Scott is a retired Assistant Chief Probation Officer for Boston’s Suffolk Juvenile Court Department. He is a happily married, father and grandfather with over 40 years of karate, youth ministry and Bible school teaching experience. He’s been studying karate (nonstop) since 1973 and at the Okinawan Academy with 9th degree Master (and Karate pioneer in the U.S.) Anthony Mirakian since 1978.  Sadly, Master Mirakian passed away on March 31, 2015. We are thankful that he knew The Lord. Sensei Scott continues his training at the Academy along with three of his 7th Degree classmates under Master Mirakian’s Sempai (First Student) Sensei Paul Zazour.

In 2019  we continued training in Traditional Okinawan Gojuryu Karate along with  Bible verse memorization, life principles sessions and tips on how to grow spiritually.  Students were also taught, some Karate history, terminology and Japanese language. 

Promotions. This year the following students advanced in rank: 

Ronald Whitehead - a Juvenile Probation Officer / Defensive Tactics Instructor,

 to 5th Degree Black Belt.

Clara Jones - a Medical Doctor, to 3rd Degree Black belt.

 

Special Visitors and Dojo (Class) Karate Training. In MaySensei Richard Scott conducted classes at GMCC and at the Okinawan Academy in Watertown MA for students from The Netherlands and Canada. He also allowed his Black Belt students to continue additional training in the Feeding Crane Kung Fu system at the Watertown dojo.

            Special Donation. The Dojo raised and donated $277 in Memory and Honor of the Late Rev. Dr. Michael E. Haynes to Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian Relief Ministry that provided humanitarian and spiritual aid to the Bahamas due to Hurricane Dorian.

            *Our “N.O.W. “ Table continues:  (N.O.W. stands for “No Other Way” and is based upon John 14:6) and distributes Free Bibles, Christian books and literature, witnessing tracts, rain ponchos, winter hand warmers, gloves, hats, treats etc.

Praise Report Our students became so excited about the Bible that they asked if they could have their own Bibles to take home. As a result, the students were given their own new copies of the “N.L.T. Hands On Bible “! Students were also taught, some Karate history, terminology and Japanese language.

Promotions. This year the following students advanced in rank: Nataeo and Nicholai Valentin, Dash Piper, Jaiden Baez, Nasir Govan, Michael Williams, Camryn Lezama, Jaylon George, and Cecil Wright. Special congratulations to student Bryce Gibbs who was promoted to the rank of First Degree Black Belt on October 24th

Dojo (Class) special karate training. Sensei Richard Scott allowed his Black Belt students to continue additional training in the Feeding Crane Kung Fu system at his Watertown dojo.

In 2017 we continued in depth Bible verse memorization, studied and learned The Lord’s Prayer and addressed students open forum questions e.g. “ Is God up in the sky?” and “ Where is God?” Tips on how to grow spiritually were taught, along with some karate history, Japanese language and karate terminology.

There are currently 18 active students. At the end of each School Marking Period, students who bring in their report cards receive The Sensei Academic Award i.e. ( $1.00 per “A” received for that term ).

The Dojo (Class) had special karate training at G.M.C.C. with Black Belt visitors from the Netherlands. Sensei Richard Scott allowed his Black Belt students to do additional Feeding Crane Kung Fu training in this related system at his Watertown dojo.

OnMay20 ,theMinistrydidafreeKarateExhibitionandafterthepresentation

of The Gospel, a number of commitments to Christ were made! The event also featured:

  • Common Sense Self Defense tips for women, children and senior citizens.
  • How to act when stopped by the Police.
  • Kobudo ( Karate Weapons ) demonstrations.
  • Special Karate Exhibits and memorabilia.
  • The awarding of Karate Rank Certificates.
  • Hurricane Relief: In September, the Karate students responded quickly and collected soda cans, bottles and cash. On 9-30-17, a $100 donation was given to Franklin Graham’s “Samaritan’s Purse” Relief Program in honor of the Late Karate Master Anthony Mirakian. This helped bring immediate Roofing Tarps, Water buckets and Emergency Supplies to the people of Puerto Rico.
  • Special Training Equipment Purchase. We’d like to thank all who helped the class obtain our “Century Vs. BOB” training dummy.

In 2016, the Dojo (Class) had special karate training at G.M.C.C. with Black Belt visitors from the Netherlands and the Okinawan Academy. Feeding Crane Kung Fu practice (Sensei Richard Scott allowed his Black Belt students to do additional seminar training in this related system at the Watertown dojo). On 2-20-16, the class did a surprise 40 Years of Teaching celebratory dinner for Sensei Scott at Legal Sea foods on Boston’s Waterfront. On 5-2-16, Sensei Scott did an hour **interview about the Karate Ministry by Pastor Bruce Wall on Boston Praise Radio. In August, two of my most faithful and supportive students, Alton and Rochelle Lewis were promoted as they left to relocate in Atlanta, Georgia.
